Alyeska Hideaway | Charming Log Cabins in Alaska

A Jeep parked in front of the Glacier Cabin at Alyeska Hideaway Cabins

The Alyeska Hideaway cabins are the perfect home base if you’re visiting Alyeska Resort or traveling between Anchorage and Seward. Just 45 minutes south of Anchorage in Girdwood, these log cabins in Alaska are within minutes of incredible hiking, waterfalls, glaciers, and more.ย

If youโ€™re anything like us, not much compares to the peacefulness of staying in a cozy, memorable cabin. And with its unbeatable location and dreamy clawfoot tub, itโ€™s hard to top a stay in Alaskaโ€™s Alyeska Hideaway cabins.

These Alaska log cabins are in Girdwood, mere minutes off the renowned Seward Highway on the route from Anchorage to Seward. Here, guests have the opportunity to relax, recharge, and enjoy the vast Alaskan wilderness and breathtaking scenery.

While the Alyeska Hideaway cabins are fantastic for getting away and unplugging, theyโ€™re also conveniently located just 45 minutes from Anchorage and six minutes from Alaskaโ€™s only ski resort, Alyeska Resort. Hence the name!

There are also countless hiking trails, waterfalls, great restaurants, shopping, and guided activities just a stoneโ€™s throw away. In our humble opinion, Alyeska Hideaway is among the best log cabins in Alaska!ย

Alyeska Hideaway Cabins Overview

  • Location: Girdwood, Alaska, about 45 minutes south of Anchorage (making it the perfect basecamp for an Alaska national parks trip itinerary!)
  • Price: $180-330 per night
  • Amenities: Outrageously comfy beds, wood-burning stove, wi-fi, full kitchen, deck, private fire pit
  • Open: Year-round
  • Best thing about these log cabins in Alaska: The uber-close proximity to endless adventures with the simultaneous ability to unplug in nature

Alyeska Hideaway has three log cabins, all set up similarly. We stayed in the Glacier Cabin and had the absolute best stay (we may or may not be 100% ready to build an Alaska log cabin of our own!).

The cabins are exceptionally clean, cozy, and equipped with everything you could possibly need. With that said, there are still some essentials we recommend adding to your cabin packing list.

The Glacier and Alyeska cabins are both one-room lofted cabins with a comfy queen bed downstairs and additional beds up in the loft.

Both of these Alaska log cabins have wood-burning stoves and dreamy bathrooms with beautiful clawfoot tubs. Naturally, we took advantage of both after jam-packed days full of Alaskan adventures!

The third cabin at Alyeska Hideaway, the Placer, is a two-room cabin well-suited for families. Aside from a full kitchen, the Placer cabin has a BBQ grill on the deck, a king bed upstairs, queen bed downstairs, and a queen-sized pull-out sofa sleeper.

Each cabin has a well-equipped kitchen complete with spices and other staple ingredients, wi-fi, a flat-screen TV, front deck with seating, and a fire pit in the back.ย The lovely, friendly hosts live in their own cabin onsite and are available if needed.

Things to do Near Alyeska Hideaway Cabins

Alyeska Resort

Alyeska Resort is Alaskaโ€™s only destination ski resort, and is chalk-full of things to do. The Alyeska Hideaway log cabins are less than 10 minutes from the resort, so itโ€™s a must during your stay.

If you visit in the winter, donโ€™t miss the opportunity to ski the longest double black diamond run in the entire world (!!), ride the aerial tram, or relax at Nordic Spa.

Summer at Alyeska offers many other activities including hiking, mountain biking, and scenic rides on the Alyeska Aerial Tram.ย

Year-round, the resort has several amazing dining options. Donโ€™t miss Bore Tide Deli & Bar at the very top of the mountain, where you can take in views of the Turnagain Arm as you enjoy a cocktail or comfort foods including bison chili.ย

Insider tip: in the summer, you can get a combo pass that includes a tram ride and $20 credit for Bore Tide. Ride the tram up, then hike down!

Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

Itโ€™s no secret that Alaska is home to some of the world’s most beautiful and diverse wildlife.

To (safely!) get up-close and personal with animals including bears, moose, elk, caribou, musk ox, wolves, bison, and porcupines โ€” and support a great cause โ€” a trip to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is a must.

The 200-acre conservation center is just 15 minutes from Alyeska Hideaway. Itโ€™s a safe haven for injured and orphaned animals, and visitors can tour the property and see the animals along a 1.5-mile trail via foot, bike, or car.

Hiking Galore

To truly experience all Alaska has to offer, you need to get out on the trails. There are SO many beautiful hikes near the Alyeska Hideaway cabins!ย

From waterfalls to wildlife sightings to Alaska glacier hikes, these Girdwood-area trails have plenty to offer every type of adventurer. Best of all, many of them are actually fairly easy!

Scenery along the hike to Virgin Creek Falls, just minutes from Alyeska Hideaway

Here are some of our favorite Alyeska hikes:ย

  • Virgin Creek Falls – 0.5 miles; easyย
  • Winner Creek – 4.9 miles; easyย
  • Byron Glacier Trail – 3.2 miles, easy
  • North Face Trail (at Alyeska Resort) – 2.3 miles; moderate
  • Crow Pass, Crystal Lake, and Barnes Mountain Trail – 6.2 miles; difficultย
  • Penguin Peak Trail – 6.3 miles, hardย

Portage Glacier Lake

Portage Glacier

40 minutes from the Alyeska log cabins, youโ€™ll find one of Alaskaโ€™s most popular and accessible glaciers, Portage Glacier.ย

There are several hiking trails in the Portage Glacier Valley, including the spectacular Trail of Blue Ice, that get you closer to the glacier. You can also take a boat ride across Portage Glacier Lake for incredible views.

This area has fantastic campsites and if you visit in the summer, there are several places to watch the seasonal salmon runs.

Things to Know About Renting Log Cabins in Alaska

First and foremost, itโ€™s important to remember that these log cabins are in ALASKA. That means you must make sure youโ€™re prepared for all types of weather and adventures, both planned and totally unexpected.ย

Itโ€™s always fairly cold in Girdwood (although the heated log cabins may make you think otherwise) and the chance of rain is ever-present, so be sure to pack layers.

The summer highs are normally in the low 60โ€™s, while winters bring low 20โ€™s, occasional single-digit temps, and a lot of snow (the average annual snowfall is over 120 inches in Girdwood, while Alyeska sees a jaw-dropping 640-plus inches annually!).ย

Itโ€™s also a good idea to brush up on wildlife safety tips. As long as youโ€™re prepared, staying in log cabins in Alaska will be a memory youโ€™ll cherish for years to come.ย

Best Time to Stay in Log Cabins in Alaska

The Alyeska Hideaway cabins are open year-round, and each season brings completely different adventures.ย

If youโ€™re hoping to ski and catch the Northern Lights, consider planning your visit during the winter months.

To explore the trails, chase waterfalls, mountain bike, and spot tons of wildlife, plan to visit between June and September (we stayed the first few days of September and highly, highly recommend this timeframe).

Prices are least expensive in this entire area during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall.

Getting to Alyeska Hideaway

One of the best things about the Alyeska cabins is their proximity to other attractions and a major airport. You can fly into Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and drive just 38 miles to Girdwood โ€” a spectacular, scenic drive.

Pro tip: stop at the little group of shops and restaurants right when you exit Seward Highway. The Speedway is the only gas station in the area, and the Alpine Cafe & Bakery is an awesome stop for coffee and treats. Grab a giant cookie!

Have we convinced you that Alyeska Hideaway has the best log cabins in Alaska?!

There are several ways to book, including VRBO and Airbnb. We personally have started to book more through VRBO, because Airbnb’s fees have gotten a bit out of control. Don’t forget, VRBO was also around long before Airbnb!

Be sure to let us know if you book a stay, or if you’ve stayed in the past, and what you think of the Alyeska Hideaway cabins! Safe travels!

Hi, Iโ€™m Taryn!

Hi, Iโ€™m Taryn!

I travel extensively, hike kind of a lot, am a champion of the underdog, definitely don't identify as 'indoorsy,' have a serious love affair with glamping, believe life largely revolves around eating and drinking well, and I'm a wannabe photographer. Kennaday Peak Lookout is one of just a handful of fire towers in Wyoming you can spend the night in (as you can see, though, it's been vandalized and trashed - I'm not sure I'd personally feel safe up here overnight). This one is unique in that you can drive right up to it.

Fire lookouts are unfortunately fading from existence as drones and other modern technology replace them, so I'm always stoked to explore one, especially when you can see the inside...and even more especially when there's no one around to have to share it with ๐Ÿ™Œ

Have you ever seen the inside of a fire lookout?

Thank you to @discovercarboncountywy and @wyoming.outdoor.adventures for sending me off on this solo adventure!

I don't often get personal on my socials, but this deserves a spot on the permanent feed.

It's my husband's birthday, which gives me the perfect opportunity (excuse) to brag on him. He doesn't even have social media anymore, though, so he won't even see this! ๐Ÿคฃ Steven recently left a job he'd been at for 16 years, sacrificing something huge in the process: time. He acquired a whopping seven weeks of PTO (a huge factor in us surviving long distance for multiple years!) and knew he'd lose it starting with a new company. But he felt more and more like a soulless number, and the environment was toxic. He came home miserable, exhausted, and irritable, and those same feelings haunted him on his days off, dreading going back.

He got everything he wanted in the new company - minus the time off, of course. We discussed it at length and ultimately decided we'd find creative ways to maximize PTO. NO job is worth feeling like that, worth letting it drastically affect your life around the clock. I'm incredibly proud of him...and actively looking for easy weekend travel destinations ๐Ÿ˜‰

That's just one of the things I love most about this guy - he stands up for what he believes in and would do absolutely anything for his family. I guess that's two things...

Happy birthday my love, my BFF, my knight in shining armor, my adventure buddy, my lucky charm ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‚โค๏ธ

Playing tourist in places I know extremely well = one of my favorite things.

Even if you're not into architecture, an architecture river tour is a must in Chicago. It's such a beautiful city with a fascinating history, and seeing it from this perspective is unforgettable. We went with @shorelinesightseeing (and had an amazing guide - shoutout to Andrew!), but there are also several other choices.
