The Intex Challenger K2 is the least expensive inflatable model in our reviews (by far!). However, it actually over-delivers for many people, especially as a first kayak, based on its combination of a low price tag and surprising features.

Despite its almost too-good-to-be-true price, the Challenger K2 is a decently capable inflatable kayak that offers up plenty of adventure in flat water conditions.

The boat’s wide design also makes it feel more spacious than it truly is, and you can’t beat the ease of use since everything’s included in the package. We also appreciate the grab line for carrying while inflated.

It could, unsurprisingly, improve in durability, but you’ll likely be ready to upgrade before you wear out this inflatable tandem kayak.

The Challenger K2 is ideal for beginner or very occasional paddlers, or anyone wanting to have an extra on hand — perhaps for a friend or small child. It’s also a great option if you want an inexpensive inflatable kayak to travel with, as opposed to renting.

While it comes with everything you need to get on the water, unless you paddle only once in a blue moon, you’ll likely want to replace the rather inefficient hand pump and paddles.

6. Intex Explorer K2

The Intex Explorer is slightly wider, so it’s more stable on the water. It’s also easier to get in and out of if you want to go swimming, and has more space for a child, dog, or extra gear. 

Also, it’s a bit easier to maneuver the Explorer, but the inflatable seats sit lower, so some people find it more difficult to paddle compared to the Challenger.

All in all, the Intex Explorer K 2 is a great deal for folks looking for their first inflatable tandem model or occasional paddlers. Don’t expect much in the way of durability, but at this price point, the Explorer is reasonable even if you only get one or two seasons out of it. 

Note: some reviewers have experienced the boat splitting at the seams and bulging, likely from over-inflation. While this can be a problem with all inflatable kayaks, it seems to be a particular concern with the Intex Explorer.

If you end up with this kayak, consider upgrading to a foot pump with built-in pressure gauge. While you’re at it, you’ll probably also want a higher-quality duffel bag.

Quick note: if you previously looked at this tandem model, it’s worth another look in 2024. In recent years, Intex made some notable changes that are truly unusual in the world of inflatable kayaks. 

Namely, the rod holders are now detachable and no longer face inwards (that was the strangest thing!), and the company added a handy mounting bracket on the floor in front of the first inflatable seat.

Speaking of seats, the only downside to the Excursion Pro is that it uses the same seats as the Intex Challenger K and Explorer K kayaks. Considering this is a substantial upgrade from those inflatable models, this boat should have better seats.

The kayak handles surprisingly well and its high-profile bow slices nicely and in a straight line through any body of water. 

Paddlers hoping to fish out of the Intex Excursion Pro will find it to be very stable and spacious. Both seats can be moved forward and backward and the footrests can be removed completely, offering tons of flexibility.

The Intex Excursion Pro Single is also one of the best single inflatable kayaks available. However, keep in mind that you can easily use the tandem model as a single by simply removing the second seat, so you get a lot more versatility with the tandem.

It’s an open deck design, which can be a pro or con, depending on your individual preferences. Either way, despite looking totally different, its design closely mimics a sit on top hardshell kayak.

Useful features like the neoprene arm rests on both sides, an adjustable foot brace, and a drainage hole in one end make the Montana stand out. On the other hand, it doesn’t come with a pump, paddles, or carry bag.

This ultra-practical feature makes the kayak easy to clean and helps it dry quickly. Plus, if it happens to puncture (which is not at all likely), you can replace it individually. The Chinook’s removable floor bladder also makes this one of the very best inflatable kayaks for dogs.

While it’s not officially designated for fishing, we’d argue that the Aquaglide Chinook 100 gives the best inflatable fishing kayaks a run for their money.

The BOTE Zeppelin Aero is the luxury car of inflatable kayaks.

Outrageously comfortable seats, impressive versatility, an area dedicated to holding a cooler or fishing gear, magnetic beverage holders, lightweight, a gear bag and hand pump that are actually worthwhile, and a dizzying array of optional add-ons…we could go on and on.

This inflatable kayak is so stable and well-designed with robust construction that you can even use it as a stand-up paddleboard (SUP). That feature alone makes it well worth the price tag!

Even if you have no intention of using the Zeppelin Aero as a SUP, it’s awesome knowing that it’s stable enough to stand up and move around or cast a line. Speaking of casting, several other features make the BOTE a top choice for the best inflatable fishing kayak.

The seats sit high up, giving you a huge range of motion and a great vantage point into the water, and the bottom is self-draining. The Zeppelin Aero also has integrated slide-in Rac holders, compatible with BOTE’s many Rac accessories.

The Tackle Rac “instantly transforms your BOTE into the ultimate fishing and adventure board,” while the Bucket Rac securely holds a cooler. The mac-daddy Power Rac has navigation lights and the ability to power fish finders, GPS systems, and more.

There are plenty of incredible features not focused on fishing, too. We love the built-in paddle holders and D-rings for towing or extra storage, and the removable floor chamber makes drying and packing the BOTE even easier.

A long keel guard protects the yak from anything sharp on the bottom and, while certainly more of a luxury feature, there are even two mounts for GoPros or other devices.

The seats in the Zeppelin Aero are noteworthy as well. They’re inflatable seats with no rigid parts, but FAR more comfortable than those in most other inflatable kayaks. And because they’re inflatable, they pack away nicely when not in use.

Additional storage pockets and molly chains on the seat backs are thoughtful, practical touches. And as of 2024, the 12’6″ Aero comes standard with a second seat. In prior years, you had to purchase the second inflatable seat separately. Paddles are still not included.

Truthfully, you’re pretty limited if you’re looking for a 3 person inflatable kayak. With that being said, the Sevylor Big Basin is actually (fortunately!) a decent model. More than just a giant kayak, it’s surprisingly rugged and capable.

This inflatable kayak offers plenty of room for three, impressive durability, and, largely thanks to its size, a ton of stability — all at a very reasonable price.

The Big Basin’s seats are removable and adjustable, so you can easily switch back and forth between an inflatable tandem kayak and a 3 person kayak.

Because of this, the Big Basin is also a great option for taller folks who need more leg room and it’s an excellent inflatable kayak for dogs or couples who like to do float trips.

The Sevylor Big Basin includes paddle holders but no paddles. When you’re shopping for them, keep in mind that you’ll need extra-long paddles for this inflatable kayak.
