Stanley Adventure All-in-One Boil + Brew French Press

The Stanley Adventure All-in-One Boil + Brew comes with a hefty, well-insulated 32-ounce pot, brewing cup, and plunger—that all nest perfectly together. Its most significant “pro” is that large capacity; one pot covers a few people and you can easily and quickly brew more for larger groups. 

Stanley’s unique two-container system is also super handy and completely eliminates one step of the camp coffee-making process. With this outdoor French press, gone are the days of having to boil water separately! Seriously, I had no idea how nice this would be until we started using it.

Aside from making excellent camping coffee, the Boil + Brew also works perfectly for other backcountry cooking needs. As another bonus, the inside is roomy enough to double as storage space for a backpacking stove, a few days’ worth of coffee, and utensils.

OXO Brew Venture French Press

Another 32-ounce option, the OXO Brew Venture is sufficient for most folks’ camp coffee needs.

The carafe is made of shatter-resistant, BPA-free Tritan™ Renew plastic, and it has a rugged black cover with an integrated handle. The non-slip, cool-to-the-touch exterior feels almost like neoprene, with a slight softness. Weighing just a hair over one pound, it’s squarely in the middle weight range.

By far the best feature? Grounds truly don’t get into your coffee.

This is due to several factors: the ultra-fine stainless steel filter has a silicone edge (a feature every other French press for camping should adopt!), the plunger goes alllll the way down, and the spout has another integrated filter.

Many people love the clear design, or ‘windows’ as OXO calls them. It is nice to see how much coffee is left with a quick glance; however, it comes with a trade-off.

Because so much of the plastic carafe isn’t insulated, coffee cools faster than with other camp French press models. If you’re brewing for a group or you tend to drink a second cup quickly, this shouldn’t be an issue, but it is worth noting.

Finally, it’s not a huge deal, but OXO marketing this as an 8-cup French press is misleading. Eight tiny, 4-ounce cups, sure, but most Americans—the target market, in this case—drink much larger cups of coffee. Keep in mind a standard shot of alcohol is 1-2 ounces.

BruTrek Basecamp Coffee Press

Like our first two picks, the BruTrek Basecamp French press also has a large 32-ounce capacity. This brewer has a completely different design, however.

BruTrek’s patented “Bru Stop” filter completely stops the brewing process once you push the plunger down. If you’re a French press veteran, you may be all-too-familiar with that second cup of coffee being bitter, a result of over-brewing. Well, this genius little filter eliminates that! 

Several reviewers actually mention that they have a difficult time pressing the plunger, but we haven’t found that to be the case. It gives some resistance, sure, but no more than any other camp French press we’ve tried. 

The BruTrek Basecamp is also double-wall insulated, which keeps your coffee hot for hours, a notable ‘perk.’ If you’re a backpacker or camping minimalist, you may want to choose another camping French press model: this one is bulky and nearly two pounds.

GSI Outdoors JavaPress, 30-ounce

Serious camping coffee aficionados needn’t look any further than the GSI Outdoors 30-ounce JavaPress.

The lightweight design is surprisingly rugged and makes a consistently great cup of coffee, so this camp French press is backcountry-ready and makes an excellent travel companion. We all know hotel coffee is blah (at best)!

The shatter-resistant plastic is super tough as it is, but GSI Outdoors upped the ante by wrapping it with a ballistic nylon cozy. Not only does this protect the JavaPress, but it also keeps the coffee inside warm for a long time and makes it easier to handle during the brewing process.

Another standout feature is the silicone-ringed plunger, which does a fantastic job of keeping grounds out of your cup.

AeroPress Go Travel Coffee Press

In a category all its own, the AeroPress Go has a cult-like following of avid outdoorsmen and coffee professionals alike. Every year, there’s even a World Aeropress Championship!

The AeroPress Go utilizes the same core press design as the iconic original, except it’s optimized for portability. Built from sturdy but lightweight plastic, its entire weight clocks in at only .7 pounds (including the cup!) and everything nests neatly into a tiny package.

Based on that teeny-tiny weight alone, it’s hard to argue that it’s not the best French press for camping!

With a unique vacuum press design, the Go is compatible with any grounds and the entire contraption is effortless to clean. You’ll likely also find yourself using it at home (the coffee quality really is THAT good!), making the value even more outstanding.

Like the other Stanley presses on this list, expect nearly bulletproof ruggedness and a double-vacuum-insulated design that keeps your beverage perfectly hot or cold for several hours.

While you should always use coarse coffee grounds in a French press, that’s especially true with this model. Perhaps because of the large volume of liquid, grounds seem more likely to sneak past the filter.

Use the right grounds and take the time to fill the camp French press precisely, and you shouldn’t have a problem. The steel plunger/filter piece does completely disassemble for easy cleaning, which is a subtle but really handy feature.
